ASU Scholarship Program
An example of the success of the Service Learning
Program is demonstrated in the graph. Students at one
Phoenix school class that received tutoring had a
significant improvement in aptitude compared to
students that did not receive tutoring.

The Service Learning Program at ASU is an "experiential learning"
program offered through Arizona State University’s University college to
undergraduate students. “Experiential learning” programs use service
to the community to enhance the educational process.

Service Learning provides undergraduates academic courses focused
on providing tutoring and mentoring services to academically "at-risk"
children in inner city school districts.  Service Learning works with kids
in Kindergarten through 8th grade to provide tutoring in critical reading
and writing skills to members of the Phoenix community who need one-
on-one attention the most.  Students work with the same children over
an entire semester in order to form a close relationship.  This is
especially important because Service Learning works in communities
where the drop out rate is extremely high and a positive role model who
is consistently available can be a powerful role model.

Since 1997 The Armstrong Family Foundation has supported a tutoring
program at the
Salvation Army South Mountain Facility.  The Foundation
provides funding for the program to tutor approximately 200 children
each day. Each child receives personal, one-on-one attention from an
ASU student tutor for six hours per week during the school year.  The
Foundation’s support has also included the construction and support of
a computer lab, a library, and a tutoring classroom.  The Foundation has
also donated vehicles to transport students between  ASU and the South
Mountain Facility and provides the funding for a graduate student to
supervise the ASU students who work at the facility.  In addition several
members of the Armstrong Family and the Armstrong Scholarship
recipients have worked for Service Learning in tutoring and supervisor
positions.
